Recreational Fire Pit Permit

When used safely and properly, fire pits can provide many seasons of enjoyment.

The Town of Vegreville Fire Services Bylaw outlines the requirements for the construction and the use of fire pits within the Town to help protect the safety of its citizens.

What are the requirements for a fire pit?

  • Is at least 3 meters ( 10 feet ) from the property line.
  • Is at least 3 meters ( 10 feet ) from any combustible materials.
  • Is at least 1 meter laterally and 5 meters vertically from any overhead utility lines.
  • Does not exceed 46 centimeters ( 18 inches ) in height
  • Does not exceed 61 centimeters ( 24 inches ) in diameter
  • Has a spark arrestor mesh screen with a grid no larger than 1.3 centimeters ( ½ inches )
  • Constructed of non-combustible materials (concrete blocks, brick or heavy gauge metal)

If I have a fire pit or an outdoor fireplace, do I need a permit?
Yes, permits are required for all fire pits, outdoor fireplaces and stationary barbeques in accordance to Bylaw #02-2018.

If I have purchased a home with a fire pit in place, do I need to obtain a permit?|
Yes. Permits are not transferable. If there was an existing permit with the previous owner, a new permit must be obtained by the new owner.

What can I burn in the fire pit?
Only clean fuel shall be used (clean, dry wood or charcoal). Refuse or waste material shall not be burned.

Is there a fee for a permit?
Yes, there is a one-time fee of $25.00 to monitor the construction and/or location of the fire pit.

What are the penalties for not complying with the Bylaw #02-2018?
Any person(s) who contravenes any provision of this bylaw is guilty of an offence and liable to a penalty of $100.00 to $500.00 and the addition of the cost of the response from the Fire Department should it be required.

How do I obtain a fire permit?
Download and print the Application form.

Complete the application ensuring you provide all the information as requested. Incomplete applications may result in delays in processing. Payment can be made by cheque, money order, or credit card.

Should you wish to pay the $25 by cheque or money order, please submit your application (with cheque or money order enclosed) as follows:

  • Drop off Box located at the Town of Vegreville Administration Building, 4829 50 Street; or,
  • Mail to Town of Vegreville, Attention Finance, Box 640 Vegreville, AB, T9C 1R7

Should you wish to pay the $25 by credit card, you must use 'Option Pay' via vegreville.com. Please submit your application as follows: 

  • Drop off Box located at the Town of Vegreville Administration Building, 4829 50 Street; or,
  • Mail to Town of Vegreville, Attention Finance, Box 640 Vegreville, AB, T9C 1R7; or,
  • Email at finance@vegreville.com; or

Should you wish to pay the $25 by Etransfer, please send the $25 to finance@vegreville.com. Please submit your application as follows:

  • Drop off Box located at the Town of Vegreville Administration Building, 4829 50 Street; or,
  • Mail to Town of Vegreville, Attention Finance, Box 640 Vegreville, AB, T9C 1R7; or,
  • Email at finance@vegreville.com; or

Once your payment is processed, your application will be forwarded for review and processing at which point you will be contacted by the Vegreville Fire Department.
